Volkswagen is preparing to expand its presence in India’s premium SUV space with the launch of the Volkswagen Tayron R Line, its new flagship three-row SUV. The model is expected to go on sale later this month, with bookings already open across dealerships and through the company’s official website.

Positioned as Volkswagen’s flagship SUV
The Volkswagen Tayron R Line will sit at the top of Volkswagen India’s lineup and marks the brand’s return to the large three-row SUV segment. Unlike some imported offerings in this category, the Tayron is being locally assembled, a move that could help Volkswagen keep pricing competitive despite the premium positioning.
The SUV is expected to be priced at around Rs. 45 lakh ex-showroom. At this level, it will compete directly with established rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian, along with the upcoming MG Majestor.
Powertrain and performance focus

Volkswagen is offering the Tayron exclusively in a fully loaded Volkswagen Tayron R Line specification, with a clear focus on performance. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the EA888 evo4 family, producing 204 PS and 320 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
All-wheel drive is standard, courtesy of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION system. According to company data, the Tayron can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.3 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 224 kmph. These figures put it among the quicker SUVs in its segment, particularly for buyers prioritising on-road performance over diesel torque.
Feature-rich cabin with a tech-first approach
Inside, the Volkswagen Tayron R Line comes with a long list of features as it is offered only in a single, fully loaded variant. The dashboard is dominated by a large 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, paired with a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster. An augmented reality head-up display is also part of the package.
Front-seat comfort is a major highlight, with 12-way electric adjustment, ventilation, memory function, massage feature and lumbar support. Other notable inclusions are a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting with 30 colour options, aimed at enhancing the premium feel for occupants across all three rows.
Sporty design and R-Line elements
From the outside, the Volkswagen Tayron R Line carries a sportier design treatment compared to regular Volkswagen SUVs. It features IQ Light HD Matrix LED headlamps, R-Line specific styling elements on the bumpers and side sections, and rides on 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels. Illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear add to the visual distinction.
Volkswagen Tayron R Line Safety and driver assistance

Safety is another strong focus area. The Tayron comes equipped with nine airbags, electronic stability control, hill ascent and descent control, and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite. The system includes 14 advanced driver assistance functions, aligning the SUV with global safety and technology standards.
Customisable drive modes are also available, allowing drivers to adjust the vehicle’s behaviour based on driving conditions or personal preference.
What it means for buyers
With the Volkswagen Tayron R Line, VW is targeting buyers looking for a petrol-powered, performance-oriented alternative in a segment dominated by diesel SUVs. Its local assembly, extensive feature list and standard all-wheel drive could appeal to customers seeking something more tech-forward and refined.
As Volkswagen prepares for the official launch, the Tayron’s reception will be closely watched, especially in a segment where brand loyalty and resale value play a major role in purchase decisions.
